How to Choose a Roofing Contractor in the Treasure Valley

Choose a contractor who is registered in Idaho, carries insurance, has consistent reviews across more than one site, and gives you a detailed written estimate and warranty. Here's how to check each of those yourself, including for us.

1. Confirm their Idaho registration

Idaho requires contractors to register with the state rather than pass a licensing exam, with limited exceptions. You can look up a contractor by name or registration number through the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL) and confirm that the registration is active. Bravo Roofing's registration number is RCE-59181.

2. Ask for proof of insurance

Ask for a current certificate of liability insurance, and ask whether the crew is covered for workplace injuries. If someone is hurt on your property or your home is damaged during the job, you want that to be the contractor's insurance problem, not yours.

3. Read reviews on more than one site

Look at Google, the BBB and Facebook, not only the testimonials on a contractor's own website. Read the negative reviews too. Every busy contractor gets some. What matters is what the complaint is about and whether the company responded professionally.

4. Verify manufacturer credentials at the source

Manufacturers such as GAF run certification programs, and those programs can decide which warranties a contractor may offer. Don't rely on a logo on a website. Look the contractor up in the manufacturer's own directory. You can find Bravo Roofing in GAF's contractor directory as a Certified Plus™ contractor.

5. Get a detailed written estimate

  • Exact materials, by brand and product line
  • Tear-off, disposal and cleanup
  • Flashing, underlayment and ventilation
  • How damaged decking is handled and priced
  • Payment schedule

6. Understand the warranty

Roofing warranties come in two parts. The manufacturer's warranty covers defects in materials, and a workmanship warranty covers installation errors. Ask who backs each one, how long each lasts and what could void them. Get it in writing.

Warning signs

  • Pressure to sign today
  • A large payment demanded up front
  • An offer to pay or waive your insurance deductible
  • A promise that insurance will buy you a new roof
  • No written contract
  • No local address or phone number

Frequently asked questions

How many roofing estimates should I get?

Two or three is usually enough to compare scope and price. Compare what's included line by line, not just the total.

Does Idaho license roofers?

Idaho uses contractor registration rather than an exam-based license. You can check a contractor's registration through the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses.
